As three students from an all girls’ school, you might wonder why we take on such a project with such little people.
We all know that as women, facing misogyny eye to eye was inevitable, but it was surprising to us when we learnt that women could also contribute to oppression. As our age matured and so did our minds, the knowledge on real world issues too expanded. Sexism, racism, poverty, corruption. These words danced in our library of vocabulary, yet all we knew was the basic definition. We didn’t know how much they linked to each other, and how the problem was more rooted to society than we thought.
Members
Our member, Samantha, is no stranger in fighting for what is right. As a member of a girl guide, she strives to bring the true meaning of equality to the table, even if the cause for what she’s fighting for was too much. She has been involved in many projects, and this was no different.
Tammy on the other hand was a quiet nature, but she is a person that knows her opinions. She could talk about a topic with you for hours on end, and she is the person who would do anything as long as it was set in her mind. Goals and deadlines are just a checklist for her to finish.
And there’s me, Vianne. I’m no fighter nor an organiser of things, but I like to read. Reading has been a passion of mine since young, from Percy Jackson books to Stephen King’s brutal ‘Mr. Mercedes’, my eyes loved dancing around the words that created worlds and worlds of story in my head. As I grow older, fiction books like them no longer bear my interest, instead my preference changed into reading articles and newsletters.
Why do we do this?
We share similar struggles and pain as girls being discriminated against by our peers and adults in our life. We might as well also contributed to the thought of oppression. But what puts our indifferences away is that we are willing to admit fault and voice out what is wrong. Even the consequences may seem too heavy to bear, we will not stand down to it. Three of us hope that maybe someone out there needs our help, and what we did helped them out in a way. That is enough for us to continue.
